NGN hits the buffer

Telstra has cancelled a A$3.4 billion NGN investment reportedly, just as Sol Trujillo had threatened. Regulators (outside the US and Japan) don't seem to be taking telcos seriously enough.

This is a serious gamble for both the Australian government and Telstra. If the country, and its incumbent service provider, are going to participate in the global networked economy then they must resolve this issue soon.

Telecom infrastructure investment is a significant enabler of future national economic prosperity.

We have studied this phenomenon at the Economic TeleDevelopment Forum since 1998, and the results are conclusive.
